Cecil’s Trees
by Shane Johnson
Cecil’s Trees
by Shane Johnson, selected as a Gallery Pick, is a hauntingly beautiful
meditation on memory, presence and the exquisite nature of the
landscape. In Shane’s image, layered silhouettes of pine trees drift
through soft mist, dissolving into one another as if suspended between
reality and recollection. The tonal palette-subdued grays and hints of
pink and ivory—creates a dreamlike atmosphere that blurs the boundary
between forest and sky. Its quiet ambiguity is particularly captivating.
Are we looking through the fog, into water, or into the folds of memory
itself? The trees appear both delicate and eternal, as if their forms
were whispered into existence rather than captured by a lens. There is a
sense that the forest is holding its breath, inviting the viewer to do
the same. Congratulations,
Shane on creating a lovely image!
Majestic
by Tom Knauss
Congratulations to Tom Knauss whose photo, Majestic, has
been awarded a Gallery Pick. In this photo Tom presents a striking
portrait of a bald eagle taken in Grand Teton National Park. Cradled in
a tapestry of pine needles, the eagle stands as a symbol of quiet power,
its intense gaze and proud posture evoking a timeless sense of strength.
Amid all the grandeur, there is a subtle note of humor: the eagle’s
expression with its slightly twisted head and piercing side-eye, carries
a look of stern disapproval or curious judgement, as if it's just caught
someone trespassing on its turf. This unexpected twist adds charm
without diminishing the bird’s dignity—it humanizes the wild in an
enduring way.
Tom’s composition, which frames the bird perfectly, allows the bird to
be centered, yet harmonized with the natural environment.
The lighting and crisp detail elevate this image. The surrounding
textures of feather, pine and filtered light are rendered in lovely
detail, offering a rich visual experience. Tom’s image celebrates the
personality and presence of one of nature’s most iconic beings—with a
wink of wit. Well done, Tom!
Edge of the Wind
Congratulations to John Solberg for his Gallery Pick image called Edge
of the Wind. John has captured a moment of raw atmospheric tension where
sky and water seem to confront one another. Shot at Lake Ontario, the
image presents a towering wall of cloud sweeping in from the horizon—its
dense, sculptural form commanding attention as it spills toward the
churning surface below. The lake, textured and restless, mirrors the
energy of the sky, creating a dialogue between elements that feel
dramatic.
The vertical composition emphasizes the vast scale of the scene,
allowing the viewer to feel dwarfed by the magnitude of nature’s motion.
There is no visible land in the frame, just sky and water—making the
title feel not only literal but poetic. We are standing at a threshold,
where calm teeters into storm, where light meets darkness, where the
seen meets the felt.
John’s image is a moment of transition—fleeting, powerful and
beautifully unsettled. Nicely done, John.
Colorful Walkway
by Michelle Turner
In what has become an annual event at Image City, Michelle shares with
us a fascinating series of photographs from her most recent travels.
This time taking us to the Old Town, Medina, Tunis in Tunisia. Each day
of her visit she searched the mosques, madrasas, palaces, archways and
alleys and with her expert eye took away the color and splendor of the
ancient community. Our pick of Colorful Walkway demonstrates that
experienced ability to visit a new venue and capture all of the elements
of color, mood, and a special and unique composition. We see the form of
the clouds in the sky mirror the pattern of the mosaic alleyway,
distinctly different in their elements, but coordinated in the
composition.
The alleyway was extraordinarily narrow, challenging a composition, but
with the wide-angle lens, Michelle has kept the vertical lines of the
building, doors and windows giving a natural and undistorted scene.
This photo, part of the exceptional series, is a pleasure to see. We
very much appreciate the opportunity she has shared with us to enjoy her
week-long daily walks through a city that was unknown to us for the
beauty she discovered.
